What is it?
At Wheatlands Primary School pupils have full access to and experience of the curriculum regardless of race, class, gender, physical ability or religious belief. The school promotes a sense of self-esteem, responsibility and tolerance in pupils. It values and challenges pupils in order that they can achieve the highest levels of attainment from their starting point.
The pupil premium is therefore a key resource for ensuring the realisation of this inclusive and aspirational ethos. The nature of the issue makes it essential that personalised, rather than blanket, support is provided for pupils.
The Pupil Premium is an allocation of additional funding provided to schools to support specific groups of children who are vulnerable to possible underachievement. These include pupils who are entitled to free school meals, those looked after by the local authority and children of armed service personnel. The government believes that the Pupil Premium Grant is the best way to address the inequalities that these children may encounter.
Why has it been introduced?
The Government believes that the Pupil Premium, which is additional to main school funding, is the best way to address the current underlying inequalities between children eligible for Free School Meals (FSM) and their wealthier peers by ensuring that funding to tackle disadvantage reaches the pupils who need it most. Whilst schools are free to spend the Pupil Premium as they see fit we are required to publish on-line information about how we have used the Premium.
